What is Root Canal Treatment?


Root canal treatment is also called as endodontic treatment/procedure.

The nerves of the tooth is in the pulp, in the center of tooth, i.e. in the root canals. Root canal treatment the treatment of nerves inside tooth.

The pulp contains blood vessels that supplies nutrients to teeth, and nerves.

Why would I need an Root canal treatment?

Root Canal treatment is necessary when the pulp tissue, which is inside the root canal, becomes infected. The infection may occur because of deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. In addition, an injury to a tooth may cause nerve damage even if the tooth has no visible cracks. Such infection, if untreated, is the cause of severe pain or dental abscess.


What are the signs needing Root Canal Treatment?

Pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, discoloration of the tooth, tenderness to touch and chewing, and swelling or pain in the lymph nodes or bone and gum tissues. Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms. If any patient feels any of these symptoms, they should visit dentist immediately to avoid complications. .

Will I feel pain during or after the procedure?

Root canal treatments are performed to relieve the pain by pulp infection. All root canal treatment procedures are carried out under local anesthesia and with latest robotic instruments. Most of out patients report that they are COMFORTABLE DURING THE PROCEDURE.

For the first few days after treatment, your tooth MAY feel tender, especially during chewing. This discomfort can be relieved prescribed medicines. All patients are instructed to follow our instructions carefully.

Your tooth may continue to feel slightly different from your other teeth for some time after the Root Canal Treatment is completed. CALL US, if you have severe pain or pressure or pain that lasts more than a few days.

Step-by-Step Endodontic Procedure

The doctor examines the x ray and give local anesthesia. After the tooth is numb, we may place a small protective sheet called a “dental dam” over the area to isolate the tooth and keep it clean and free of saliva during the procedure.

An oppening is made in the crown of the tooth. Small instruments are used to clean the infected tissues from root canals inside the tooth and to shape the root canal to receieve filling.

After the root canal is cleaned and shaped, it is filled a rubber-like material called gutta-percha to ensure complete sealing of the root canals. A temporary filling is placed to close the opening, which is the end of root canal treatment proceure. However, the temporary filling is to be replaced with a permanent filling in next visit before crown.

The patient is instructed to return for crown or other restoration placed on the tooth to protect and restore it to full function.
If the cavitation is large to destroy sufficient structure to hold the restoration in place, a post & core restoration may be required.
